Kids need routines! Knowing what is coming up allows a child to… *make predictions *form questions *set expectations *develop their sense of time *improve sleep *ease anxiety But what we don’t always hear is this: Since their brains aren’t fully developed—& because they experience the world differently—young children require that routines be presented differently. With a little creativity, you can effectively communicate routines to even the youngest children. Recently, for @saatva, I spoke to experts about how to do this. Below, their suggestions: ⭐️Keep things simple. Pick spots of your day—most experts suggest mornings and evenings—where a routine might be most helpful. ⭐️Utilize a routine tool a la @charmspring. Toddlers and young children move through the world very differently than adults; visual charts or calendars are highly effective. ⭐️Make routines collaborative Young children crave—and are motivated to obtain—a sense of control. ⭐️Communicate effectively. Try “first-then” language, ask your child what’s next in their routine, and communicate any changes to the routine in advance whenever possible. ⭐️Remember: All kids are different. Finding the right “flow” with your child is important. ⭐️Model routines. Create routines for yourself! WHITE NOISE FOR SLEEP—SAVE & SHARE THIS POST. Recently, I wrote a story for @saatva (I am a part of their advisory panel!) about using white noise for baby (and adult) sleep. I spoke with two pediatricians—Kelly Fradin, MD (@adviceigivemyfriends) & Krupa Playforth, MD (@thepediatricianmom)—and here is some of what I discovered: 🩵Lots of people use it! A 2023 survey found about 37% of parents utilize white noise for their children’s sleep 🩵Many studies find it can help babies fall asleep, stay asleep, and decrease crying when used properly. 🩵Recent research questions its long-term use, particularly at too-high volumes, and reminds us that some white noise devices can exceed safe volume levels for babies and children. & here are some pointers for using it safely: 1. When in doubt, turn the volume down. Many sound machines can get much louder than what’s considered safe for ears; usually, that’s no higher than 50 decibels, per the American Academy of Pediatrics (@ameracadpeds). 2. Keep cords at least a foot away from an infant’s sleep space or even on the other side of the room. 3. Know that white noise has a dependency risk, but this is true with any part of a sleep environment, such as a stuffed animal or a dark room. 4. You don’t need a white noise device to create white noise. Fans, for example, work well and keep air circulating. 5. White noise has benefits for older kids, too. If your child likes white noise, it helps them sleep, and you’re using it safely, there’s no need to discontinue just because your baby is growing up. 6. White noise can be most impactful when ambient noise can’t be controlled or decreased—apartment living, city living, multifamily homes, or new places you may be traveling to where noises are unfamiliar or louder than usual. Pineapple-Basil Agua Fresca “Margarita “ 2 cups fresh pineapple 6-10 fresh basil leaves 1 cup water 3/4 ounces simple syrup Ice Granulated sugar for rim Pineapple slices and basil leaves for garnish Add pineapple, basil and water to a blender and purée until smooth. Strain the mixture through a mesh sieve into a container and refrigerate. Rub the rim of a margarita glass with pineapple slice and drip the rim into granulated sugar to coat. To a cocktail shaker or lidded glass jar, add ice, about half of the strained Agua Fresca and simple syrup, shake vigorously. Pour into prepared glass and garnish with a slice of pineapple and basil leaves.
