We’ve made some mistakes. Some of them cost us years of delay with our fruit trees. Here are a few things we’ve learned along the way: Fencing is key if you have deer or livestock. Even with wire barricades around our first trees, we lost several to animals who simply pushed through and took out three year old trees. We’re talking the entire tree. Fence well. Tree guards to protect young trunks will save your trees from small, nibbling animals. @theplanttechie had a reel recently showing how he used corrugated ventilated 4” pipe to protect tree trunks. There’s fantastic info on his page about growing trees. Your local extension office is a wealth of information when it comes to varieties of trees that thrive in your area. Look for ones that are resistant to local issues. For instance, Missouri is known for cedar rust, fire blight, and scab affecting apple trees. In addition, some trees are better suited for fresh eating, canning, juicing, and so on. Variety is importantly. If you’re just getting started, purchase easy growers. Apples and pears do well here, but stone fruits struggle. Will I plant peaches and nectarines? Definitely. But I’ll also be mindful of the planting location and sheltering from late spring frost. Mulch is your friend. And finally, purchase from a reliable source. These trees are from Stark Brothers. This was my second order and I have one awaiting shipping. Their customer service is excellent and selection of trees and plants is great. The trees are still very small so I can’t comment on the longevity of them yet, but the Chicago fig I purchased several years ago is doing very well since we started “winterizing” it for our climate.Less
